The latest information about local council electoral matters is as follows:
- Bolsover district council: Byelection on 25 August in Shirebrook South West ward after the death of Independent councillor Alan Waring. Term ends 2015.
- Gedling borough council: Vacancy in Phoenix ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Ian Howarth, who is emigrating. Term ends 2015.
- Lincolnshire county council: Vacancy in Sleaford West and Leasingham division after the death of the Deputy Leader of the council, Barry Singleton, who was a Conservative councillor. Term ends 2013.
- Mansfield district council: Vacancy in Park Hall ward after the death of Labour councillor Dorothy Beastall just a day after she was re-elected. Term ends 2015.
East of England
- Essex county council: Byelection on 8 September in Stock division after the disqualification of Lord Hanningfield who was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment for false accounting. Originally elected as a Conservative, he was sitting as an Independent. Term ends 2013.
- Fenland district council: Vacancy in Staithe ward after the death in a car accident of former Wisbech Mayor Roger Green, a Conservative councillor. Term ends 2015.
- Islington borough council: Byelection on 11 August in St Peter’s ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Shelley Coupland, who has been charged with benefit fraud and wants to clear her name. Term ends 2014.

- Allerdale borough council: Byelection on 1 September in Keswick ward after the resignation of Independent councillor David Robinson, due to ill health. If Labour were to gain this ward they would attain an overall majority. Term ends 2015.
- Cheshire West and Chester council: Vacancy in Ellesmere Port Town ward after the sudden death of veteran councillor and Labour group leader Derek Bateman. Term ends 2015.
- Knowsley borough council: Byelection on 18 August in Page Moss ward after the resignation of Labour councillor and former Mayor Tommy Russell. Term ends May next year.
- South Lakeland district council: Vacancy in Ulverston North ward after the death of Conservative councillor Colin Hodgson. Term ends May next year.
- Adur district council: Vacancy in Cokeham ward after the death of Conservative councillor Norman Wright. Term ends May next year.
- Cherwell district council: Vacancy in Bicester North ward after the death of Conservative councillor Carole Steward. Term ends 2015.
- Fareham borough council: Belated acknowledgment should be given that Jack Englefield, elected as a Liberal Democrat in Titchfield Common ward, left the party to sit as an Independent in May, and that Nick Gregory, elected for the Liberal Democrats in Fareham West ward, also joined the Conservative Party earlier this year.
- Mole Valley district council: Vacancy in Bookham South ward after the death of chairman of the council Anne Howarth, who was a Liberal Democrat councillor. Term ends in May next year.
- Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council: Byelection on 11 August in Eton and Castle ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Liam Maxwell, who has been appointed as an adviser to the Government on technology. Term ends 2015.
- Bristol city council: Byelection on 8 September in Southmead ward after the resignation due to ill health of Liberal Democrat councillor Dr Jacqueline Bowles. Term ends 2013.
- North Devon district council: Byelection on 11 August in Fremington ward after the resignation of Independent councillor Joanne Bell due to ill health. Term ends 2015.
- North Somerset council: Vacancy in Backwell ward after the death of Independent councillor Tom Collinson. Term ends 2015.
- Purbeck district council: Following last month’s byelection in which the Conservatives gained a seat in Lytchett Matravers ward from the Liberal Democrats and became the largest party on the council with exactly half the seats, the Liberal Democrat administration has resigned and a Conservative administration appointed.
- Somerset county council: Paul Maxwell was elected councillor for South Petherton division on 4 August. He gains for the Liberal Democrats a seat previously held by the Conservatives.
- Birmingham city council: Impending vacancy in Sparkbrook ward due to the resignation of Respect councillor Salma Yaqoob due to ill health. Term ends 2014.
- Nuneaton and Bedworth borough council: Martyn Findley, who was elected for the British National Party in Barpool ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent councillor.
- Stafford borough council: Vacancy in Walton ward after the death of veteran Conservative councillor Mike Carey. Term ends 2015.
- Wolverhampton city council: Vacancy in Graiseley ward after the death of Labour councillor Dr Mohan Passi. Term ends 2014.
- North Yorkshire county council: Impending vacancy in Thornton Dale and The Wolds division due to the resignation of Conservative councillor Ron Haigh, who is moving out of the county to help care for his wife. Term ends 2013.
- Blaenau Gwent county borough council: The Mayor of Blaenau Gwent, Mike Bartlett, who was elected as an Independent in Llanhilleth ward, has joined the Labour Party.
- Gwynedd county council: Byelection on 29 September in Penrhyndeudraeth division after the resignation of Dewi Lewis of Plaid Cymru. There is also a vacancy in Diffwys and Maenofferen division after the resignation of Llais Gwynedd councillor Richard Lloyd Jones. Both terms end in May next year.
- Argyll and Bute council: Vacancy in Oban North and Lorn ward after the death of Donald MacDonald, who was a member of the Scottish National Party. Term ends May next year. It should also be noted that Mary-Jean Devon, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in Oban South and the Isles ward but left the party to sit as an Independent, joined the Scottish National Party in June. The full composition of the council is: Alliance of Independent Councillors 12, Scottish National Party 9, Argyll First 3, Conservative 2, Argyll and Bute Independent Councillors Group 1, with two councillors who are not a member of any group and one vacancy.
- Edinburgh city council: Byelection on 18 August in City Centre ward after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor David Beckett, who is to attend a course at Harvard. Term ends May next year.
- North Ayrshire council: Byelection on 25 August in Saltcoats and Stevenston ward after the resignation of Labour councillor David Munn. Term ends May next year.
- Perth and Kinross council: Byelection on 15 September in Highland ward after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor Ken Lyall, who is disillusioned with party politics and is emigrating to Australia. Term ends May next year.
