Essex county council: Byelection on 8 September in Stock division after the disqualification of Lord Hanningfield who was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment for false accounting. Originally elected as a Conservative, he was sitting as an Independent. Term ends 2013.
Islington borough council: Byelection on 11 August in St Peterâ€™s ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Shelley Coupland, who has been charged with benefit fraud and wants to clear her name. Term ends 2014.

Allerdale borough council: Byelection on 1 September in Keswick ward after the resignation of Independent councillor David Robinson, due to ill health. If Labour were to gain this ward they would attain an overall majority. Term ends 2015.
Purbeck district council: Following last month’s byelection in which the Conservatives gained a seat in Lytchett Matravers ward from the Liberal Democrats and became the largest party on the council with exactly half the seats, the Liberal Democrat administration has resigned and a Conservative administration appointed.
Somerset county council: Paul Maxwell was elected councillor for South Petherton division on 4 August. He gains for the Liberal Democrats a seat previously held by the Conservatives.
North Yorkshire county council: Impending vacancy in Thornton Dale and The Wolds division due to the resignation of Conservative councillor Ron Haigh, who is moving out of the county to help care for his wife. Term ends 2013.
Gwynedd county council: Byelection on 29 September in Penrhyndeudraeth division after the resignation of Dewi Lewis of Plaid Cymru. There is also a vacancy in Diffwys and Maenofferen division after the resignation of Llais Gwynedd councillor Richard Lloyd Jones. Both terms end in May next year.
Argyll and Bute council: Vacancy in Oban North and Lorn ward after the death of Donald MacDonald, who was a member of the Scottish National Party. Term ends May next year. It should also be noted that Mary-Jean Devon, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in Oban South and the Isles ward but left the party to sit as an Independent, joined the Scottish National Party in June. The full composition of the council is: Alliance of Independent Councillors 12, Scottish National Party 9, Argyll First 3, Conservative 2, Argyll and Bute Independent Councillors Group 1, with two councillors who are not a member of any group and one vacancy.
Edinburgh city council: Byelection on 18 August in City Centre ward after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor David Beckett, who is to attend a course at Harvard. Term ends May next year.
North Ayrshire council: Byelection on 25 August in Saltcoats and Stevenston ward after the resignation of Labour councillor David Munn. Term ends May next year.
