Broxbourne borough council: Tony Siracusa was elected councillor for Cheshunt Central ward at the byelection on 30 June. He retains the seat for the Conservative Party.
Essex county council: Former council leader Lord Hanningfield (Stock division) was jailed for nine months on 1 July as part of the Parliamentary expenses scandal. This sentence will disqualify him from the council if no appeal is lodged within 28 days. He was elected as a Conservative but had been sitting as an Independent.
Norfolk county council: Byelection on 14 July in Old Catton division after the resignation of Conservative councillor Stuart Dunn. Term ends 2013.
Wokingham council: Byelection on 21 July in Remenham, Wargrave and Ruscombe ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Claire Stretton, who has moved to Maidenhead and was elected as a councillor for Boyn Hill ward on the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead earlier this month. Term ends 2012.
Gwynedd county council: Byelection on 21 July in Glyder division after the death of Plaid Cymru councillor Dai Rees Jones. Term ends in May next year. If Plaid Cymru hold the seat, they will have an overall majority on the council.
Aberdeen city council: The uneasy situation of the council having two Conservative Party groups has ended. The two members of the former ‘Scottish Conservative Group’, Jim Farquharson (Hazlehead/Ashley/Queens Cross ward) and Alan Milne (Lower Deeside ward), have formed a new ‘Independent Alliance Group’ under the leadership of former Independent councillor Marie Boulton (also Lower Deeside ward). The former ‘Aberdeen Conservative Group’ consisting of Alan Donnelly (Torry/Ferryhill ward) and Jill Wisely (Airyhall/Broomhill/Garthdee ward) has become the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Group.
Edinburgh city council: Byelection on 18 August in City Centre ward after the resignation of Scottish National Party councillor David Beckett, who is to attend a course at Harvard. Term ends May next year.
