The latest information about local council electoral matters is as follows:
- Broxtowe borough council: The Liberal Democrats have agreed to form a coalition with Labour to take control of the council. An error has been discovered which led to Hazel Charlesworth wrongly being declared elected in Eastwood North and Greasley (Beauvale) ward, in place of her husband Bob Charlesworth; both are Liberal Democrats but an election petition will be presented to rectify the situation.
- Derby city council: The Liberal Democrat group has not yet decided what to do about council control, with the group leader asking for more information about the Labour group’s plans.
- Derbyshire county council: There are two vacancies. That in Sawley division follows the death of veteran Independent councillor Bill Camm. That in Eckington division is a result of the resignation of Labour councillor Steve Pickering, who has taken a politically restricted post. Term ends 2013.
- Derbyshire Dales district council: Vacancy in Stanton ward after the sole candidate nominated for the full council elections withdrew. Term ends 2015.
- High Peak borough council: The Labour group has definitely declared its intention to form a minority administration.
- Mansfield district council: Vacancy in Park Hall ward after the death of Labour councillor Dorothy Beastall just a day after she was re-elected. Term ends 2015.
- Rushcliffe borough council: Polling in Manvers ward has been postponed from 5 May after the death of sitting Conservative councillor Wally Smith, who was a candidate for re-election.
- South Kesteven district council: The election in Deeping St James ward has been postponed from 5 May to 23 June after the death of sitting Liberal Democrat councillor Ken Joynson.
East of England
- Broxbourne borough council: Vacancy in Cheshunt Central ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Jason Brimson who has been arrested on suspicion of fraud. Term ends 2014.
- Colchester borough council: The coalition of Liberal Democrats, Labour and The Highwoods Group which has run the council for the past year has been agreed again for the coming year.
- Essex county council: Byelection on 9 June in Chelmsford Central division after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Margaret Hutchon. Term ends 2013.
- Rochford district council: Byelection on 16 June in Hullbridge ward after the death of Conservative councillor Peter Robinson. Term ends 2012.
- Waveney district council: An offer from the outgoing Conservative council leader to form a cross-party administration with Labour has been rejected by the Labour group. The Conservatives believe the Independent councillor Peter Collecott will support them, while Labour think they have the support of Green Party councillor Graham Elliott.
- Corporation of London: Robert Howard was elected councillor for Lime Street ward on 10 May, and Alex Deane was elected councillor for Farringdon Without ward on 11 May. The council is non-partisan, although Alex Deane is an active Conservative Party member.
- Harrow borough council: Byelection on 2 June in Canons ward after the death of veteran Conservative councillor John Cowan. Term ends 2014. Meanwhile Stanley Sheinwald, who was elected for the Conservatives in Hatch End ward, has left the group to sit as an Independent.
- Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea: There are two byelections on 9 June, both due to the deaths of Conservative councillors. They are Dr Iain Hanham (husband of former council leader and now Government minister Baroness Hanham) in Brompton ward, and Andrew Dalton in Queen’s Gate ward. Both terms end in 2014.
- Southwark borough council: Vacancy in Peckham ward after the death of the Mayor of Southwark, Tayo Situ, who was a Labour councillor. Term ends 2014.
- Wandsworth borough council: Impending vacancy in Thamesfield ward (to take effect on 18 May) due to the resignation of council leader Edward Lister, who has been appointed Chief of Staff to Boris Johnson and Deputy Mayor for Planning. Term ends 2014.
- Newcastle-upon-Tyne city council: Two wards have had their elections postponed from 5 May to 16 June due to the deaths of candidates. They are Byker (where the sitting councillor is Labour) and Westerhope (where the Liberal Democrat candidate Neil Hamilton died on polling day).
- Allerdale district council: The Labour group has formally declared its intention of forming a minority administration.
- Carlisle city council: The two Independent councillors, Bill Graham (Hayton ward) and Robert Betton (Botcherby ward), have decided to form a technical group.
- Cheshire East council: The election in Crewe South division has been postponed to 16 June after the death of Betty Howell, a sitting Liberal Democrat councillor who was seeking re-election.
- Liverpool city council: Former Liberal Democrat group leader Warren Bradley (Wavertree ward) was suspended by the Liberal Democrats during the election over claims of electoral fraud, and is no longer counted in the Liberal Democrat group. His close ally Sharon Green, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in St Michael’s ward, has left the party to sit as an Independent.
- Rochdale borough council: As noted last week the Independent Alliance group, formed by defecting Liberal Democrat councillors, has dissolved. Councillors Peter Davison (Castleton ward) and Barbara Todd (Spotland and Falinge ward) have joined the Labour group, giving it an overall majority on the council. The remaining member of the group, Patricia Flynn (Castleton ward), has joined the Conservatives, as has Peter Evans (Littleborough Lakeside ward) who moved from the Liberal Democrat group.
- Wirral borough council: Following the local elections, the Labour group is suggesting a motion of no confidence in Conservative councill leader Jeff Green. The Liberal Democrat group has not yet decided its response.
- Brighton and Hove city council: The Labour group has decided against any form of arrangement with the Green Party, and as a result the Greens will run the council as a minority administration. The proposed new cabinet has been announced.
- Isle of Wight council: Vacancy in Binstead and Fishbourne ward after the death of Conservative councillor Ivan Bulwer. Term ends 2013.
- Milton Keynes council: The Conservative group are intending to form a minority administration, with the Liberal Democrats accepting they will be in opposition.
- Mole Valley district council: Speculation about the intentions of the Ashtead Independents, who hold the balance of power, continues.
- Reading borough council: The Green Party councillors, who hold the balance of power, have held meetings with the Labour group. They have ruled out a coalition but have not decided who they will support to run the council.
- Surrey county council: Byelection on 19 May in St Johns and Brookwood division after the resignation of Conservative councillor Elizabeth Compton. Term ends in 2013.
- Thanet district council: Negotiations between the Independent group and the two main parties on the council over its control are ongoing.
- Bath and North East Somerset council: The Labour group continues to talk to the two large groups to discuss the shape of the next administration.
- North Devon district council: Following the local elections, an arrangement between the Liberal Democrat and Independent groups looks likely to take control of the council.
- Poole council: The Conservatives have formally proposed to run a minority administration on the council.
- Purbeck district council: The council is now under no overall control. There is vacancy in Lytchett Matravers ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Mark Gracey. Term ends 2014.
- South Gloucestershire council: The three parties on the council have agreed that the Conservatives will run a minority administration.
- Weymouth and Portland borough council: Geoff Petherick (Wyke Regis ward), who was previously Leader of the council but was not re-elected as leader of the Conservative group, has resigned from it to sit as an Independent councillor.
- Newcastle-under-Lyme borough council: The election in Seabridge ward has been postponed from 5 May to 23 June after the death of a candidate.
- Solihull borough council: Howard Allen, who was originally elected as a Liberal Democrat in Shirley West ward but left the party a year ago, has joined the Green Party.
- Staffordshire county council: Byelection on 14 July in Burton Town division after the death of Labour councillor Peter Beresford, who had previously announced his resignation due to ill health. Churnet Valley division is vacant after the death of Conservative councillor Barrie Mycock. Both terms end in 2013.
- Walsall borough council: The Liberal Democrat group has asked the public for help in guiding its decision about who to support into power in the hung council.Wychavon district council: Vacancy in Elmley Castle and Somerville ward after no candidates were nominated in the full council elections.
- Calderdale borough council: The Labour and Liberal Democrat groups, who are in coalition and have the same number of seats, are having an internal debate about which group leader will become the council leader.
- Kirklees borough council: No party has an overall majority, but it is probable that Labour minority control will continue.
- North East Lincolnshire council: Andrew De Freitas, the outgoing Liberal Democrat leader has rejected forming a coalition with the Conservatives and pledged a smooth transition to a Labour minority administration.
- Scarborough borough council: A cabinet consisting of Conservatives, Independents and Liberal Democrats has been announced.
- Conwy county borough council: Byelection on 16 June in Uwchaled division after the death of Plaid Cymru councillor Wil Charles Edwards. Term ends 2012.
- Gwynedd county council: Byelection on 16 June in Arllechwedd division after the death of John Robert Jones of the Liberal Democrats. Term ends 2012.
- Swansea city council: Veronyca Bates Hughes, who was elected for the Liberal Democrats in Cockett division, has left the party to sit as a non-aligned councillor. Her move removes the overall majority of the ruling Liberal Democrat-led coalition administration.
- Torfaen county borough council: Vacancy in Snatchwood division after the death of Independent councillor Tom Gould. Term ends 2012.
- Aberdeen city council: Byelection on 19 May in Dyce/Bucksburn/Danestone ward after the death of veteran Liberal Democrat councillor Ron Clark. There is another byelection on 23 June in Airyhall/Broomhill/Garthdee ward after the resignation of Scott Cassie, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat but sitting as an Independent after being charged with fraud. Both terms end 2012.
- Dumfries and Galloway council: Byelection on 16 June in Abbey ward after the resignation of Conservative Party councillor Michael Thomson.
- Falkirk council: Byelection on 9 June in Bo’ness and Blackness ward after the death of Scottish National Party councillor John Constable. Term ends 2012.
- Highland council: Byelection in Tain and Easter Ross ward on 9 June, after the death of Alan Torrance who was elected as an Independent but had joined the Scottish National Party group. Term ends 2012.
