Tower Hamlets borough council: Following the referendum vote in favour of establishing the position, the election of an executive Mayor for Tower Hamlets will be held on 21 October. Lutfur Rahman, former leader of the council (2008-10) for Labour, has accepted nomination as an Independent candidate against the official Labour candidate and has therefore been expelled from the Labour Party; he will sit as an Independent councillor.
Durham county council: Byelection on 30 September in Brandon ward, after the death of Labour councillor Ronnie Rodgers. A fortnight later on 14 October there will be a byelection in Deneside ward after the death of Labour former council leader Albert Nugent. Both terms end in 2013.
Gateshead borough council: Labour candidates were elected in two byelections on 23 September. Eileen McMaster will represent Lobley Hill and Bensham ward, and Denise Robson will sit for Saltwell ward. Each held the seat for their party. Meanwhile Yvonne McNicol, who was elected as a Liberal Democrat in Dunston Hill and Whickham East ward, has joined the Labour Party due to her opposition to the Coalition government.
North Tyneside borough council: Byelection on 30 September in Battle Hill ward following the resignation of Labour councillor Mary Glindon, now MP for North Tyneside. Term ends May 2011.
Stockton-on-Tees borough council: There are two vacancies. That in Ingleby Barwick East ward is caused by the resignation of Ingleby Barwick Independent Society member Andrew Larkin. That in Mandale and Victoria ward comes after the death of councillor Allison Trainer, who was a member of the Thornaby Independent Association. Both terms end in May 2011.
Liverpool city council: Vacancy in Croxteth ward, after the death of Labour councillor and Deputy Lord Mayor Rose Bailey. There is expected to be a double vacancy election due to the impending resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Phil Moffatt who is moving to Northern Ireland. Terms end 2011 and 2012.
Manchester city council: Byelection on 4 November in Hulme ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Emily Lomax, who has been charged with drink-driving. Term ends 2012.
Rossendale borough council: There are two byelections on 7 October. In Healey and Whitworth ward, Labour councillor Roger Wilson has resigned from a term due to end in May 2011; in Irwell ward, Conservative councillor Michael Christie has resigned from a term due to end in 2014, for health reasons.
Tameside borough council: Byelection on 30 September in Longdendale ward after the death of Labour councillor Roy Oldham, who was leader of the council for 30 years. Term ends 2014. The byelection is likely to be held on 30 September.
Chiltern district council: There are two byelections on 21 October. Ashley Green, Latimer and Chenies ward will poll after the death of Conservative councillor Graham Sussum, and Great Missenden ward will poll after the resignation of Independent councillor Bob Swayne, who was elected as a Conservative. Term ends May 2011.
Elmbridge borough council: There are two byelections on 21 October. That in Hersham North is for a term ending in 2012 and arises from the resignation of Conservative councillor Doug Packer, who is moving out of the borough; that in St George’s Hill ward is for a term ending May 2011 and follows the death of John Bartlett, an Independent councillor and former cabinet member.
Wealden district council: Peter Newnham was elected councillor for Heathfield North and Central ward on 23 September, holding the seat for his party.
West Sussex county council: Byelection on 7 October in Maidenbower division due to the impending resignation of former council leader Henry Smith, who is now MP for Crawley. Term ends 2013.
Winchester city council: Byelection on 14 October in St Paul ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Karen Barratt. If the Liberal Democrats do not win, then they will lose their majority on the council. Term ends May 2011.
Swindon borough council: Vacancy in Moredon ward after the resignation of Conservative councillor Steph Exell. Term ends May 2011.
Teignbridge district council: Alistair Dewhirst, the Liberal Democrat candidate, was elected councillor for Ipplepen ward on 23 September. He gained the seat from the Conservatives and thereby ensured that his party becomes the largest group on the council.
Gwynedd county council: There are two byelections. On 30 September, Bowydd and Rhiw ward will poll after the resignation of Llais Gwynedd councillor Dafydd Hughes. A week later on 7 October, Seiont ward will poll after the death of Independent councillor Bob Anderson. Both terms end in 2012.
Isle of Anglesey council: Vacancy in Rhosneigr ward after the resignation of ‘Original Independent’ councillor and former council leader Phil Fowlie, due to ill health. Term ends 2012.
Swansea city council: Byelection on 21 October in Newton ward after the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Susan Waller. Term ends 2012.
Moray council: Impending vacancy in Forres ward due to the resignation of Conservative councillor Iain Young, which will take effect on 30 September. Term ends 2012.
South Lanarkshire council: Byelection on 28 October in East Kilbride West ward after the resignation of Labour councillor Michael McCann, now MP for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow. Term ends 2012.
