Forthcoming byelections in principal local authorities, and seats vacant, appear to be as follows:

18 June

  • Inverclyde council: Ward 6 – Inverclyde South West, after the death of Ken Ferguson of the Scottish National Party. Term ends 2012, assuming the Scottish Local Government (Elections) Bill is passed by the Scottish Parliament.
  • Stockton-on-Tees borough council: Ingleby Barwick West ward, after the disqualification of Lee Narroway (then of the Ingleby Barwick Independent Society) who has been sentenced to a term of 26 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for two years. Term ends 2011.

25 June

  • Angus council: Monifieth and Sidlaw ward, after the death of Scottish National Party councillor Frank Ellis. Term ends 2012, assuming the Scottish Local Government (Elections) Bill is passed by the Scottish Parliament.

16 July

  • Derbyshire county council: Kirk Hallam division, not a byelection but part of the county council elections postponed from 4 June due to the death of a candidate. In 2005 the division was won by Labour. Term ends 2013.
  • Erewash borough council: Abbotsford ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Mike Sherwood. Term ends 2011.
  • Warwickshire county council: Arbury and Stockingford division, after the resignation of newly-elected Conservative Tom Wilson who was employed by the authority at the time of his nomination and therefore disqualified. He has since resigned and will defend his seat at the byelection. Term ends 2013.
