Forthcoming byelections in principal local authorities, and seats vacant, appear to be as follows:

30 July

• Broxtowe borough council: Brinsley ward, after Sadie Graham-Single was disqualified for failing to attend any meetings in six months. Originally elected for the British National Party, Mrs Graham-Single was expelled from the party in December 2007 and had been sitting as an Independent. Term ends 2011.
• Cheltenham borough council: All Saints ward, after the death of Tina Franklin (Liberal Democrat). Term ends May 2010.
• Tameside borough council: Denton North East ward, after the death of veteran Labour councillor Martin Wareing. Term ends 2012.

13 August

• King’s Lynn and West Norfolk borough council: Gaywood Chase ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Derrick Murphy who is now concentrating on his role as cabinet member for cultural services and Deputy Leader of Norfolk county council. Term ends 2011.
• Scarborough borough council: Hertford ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor David Chambers. Term ends 2011.
• Scarborough borough council: Streonshalh ward, after the resignation of Rob Broadley of the Liberal Democrats. Term ends 2011.
• Torridge district council: Holsworthy ward, after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Des Shadrick. Term ends 2011.

20 August

• Ashfield district council: Hucknall Central ward, after the death of Robert Spray (Independent). Term ends 2011.
• Blackpool borough council: Stanley ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Granville Heap. Term ends 2011.
• Forest of Dean district council: Mitcheldean and Drybrook ward, after the death of George Read MBE, who sat as an Independent councillor for over 40 years. Term ends 2011.
• West Lindsey district council: Saxilby ward, after the resignation of Jackie Brockway (Liberal Democrat). Term ends 2011.

27 August

• Harrogate borough council: Starbeck ward, after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Granville Ward. Term ends 2011.

3 September

• Medway council: Luton and Wayfield ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Dennis McFarlane. Term ends 2011.
• Plymouth city council: Ham ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Chris Pattison to take a job with the Audit Commission. Term ends 2012.

8 October

• Ryedale district council: Pickering East ward, after the resignation of veteran Liberal Democrat councillor Arthur Aslett who is moving out of the district. Term ends 2011.

• Amber Valley borough council: Ripley and Marehay ward, after the death of Labour councillor Geoff Carlile who was Leader of the council in the early 1990s. Term ends 2011.
• Barnsley borough council: St Helens ward, after the death of Labour councillor David Bostwick who was cabinet member for adult social services and health. Term ends May 2010.
• Buckinghamshire county council: Amersham division, after the death of Conservative councillor Pauline Wilkinson MBE. Term ends 2013.
• Daventry district council: Drayton ward, after the disqualification of Terry Mullett who has been sentenced to 18 weeks’ imprisonment for benefit fraud; background checks also revealed that he was disqualified from election. He was a Conservative when first elected but had recently been sitting as an Independent. Term ends 2011.
• East Ayrshire council: Doon Valley ward, after the death of Independent councillor James Sutherland. Term ends 2012, assuming the Scottish Local Government (Elections) Bill receives Royal Assent.
• Fenland district council: March West ward, after the death of Peter Skoulding, a former Mayor of March and a Conservative councillor. Term ends 2011.
• Gosport borough council: Leesland ward, after Liberal Democrat group leader Peter Chegwyn was disqualified for two years by the Adjudication Panel. Term ends May 2010.
• Hampshire county council: Hardway division, after Liberal Democrat councillor Peter Chegwyn was disqualified for two years by the Adjudication Panel. Term ends 2013.
• Harborough district council: Market Harborough Welland ward, after the impending resignation of Bev Field (Liberal Democrat) who is moving out of the district. Term ends 2011.
• Hartlepool council: Elwick ward, after the death of veteran Independent councillor Stan Kaiser. Term ends May 2010.
• Malvern Hills district council: Hallow ward, after the resignation of Conservative councillor Jon Hickton. Term ends 2011.
• Newark and Sherwood district council: Beacon ward, after the death of former council leader Peter Prebble (Conservative). Term ends 2011.
• North Tyneside borough council: Preston ward, after Conservative councillor Linda Arkley was elected Mayor of North Tyneside. Term ends 2011.
• Nottinghamshire county council: Newark East division, after the death of Conservative councillor Peter Prebble. Term ends 2013.
• Redcar and Cleveland council: South Bank ward, after the death of Labour councillor Marilyn Bramley. Term ends 2011.
• South Tyneside borough council: Westoe ward, after the Independent councillor Allen Branley was disqualified for not attending a council meeting in six months. Term ends 2012.
• Stockport borough council: Cheadle and Gatley ward, after the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Brian Millard, who was Leader of the Council in 2005-07. Term ends in May next year.
• Tendring district council: Burrsville ward, after the death of Charlie Sambridge (Conservative). Term ends 2011.
• West Somerset district council: West Quantock ward, after the resignation of Mitch Wicking who sat as an Independent councillor. He was recently suspended from office for three months by the Adjudication Panel after publicizing details of the compensation payments to departing Chief Executive Tim Howes. Term ends 2011.
• Wiltshire council: Southwick ward, after the death of Conservative councillor Tony Phillips, a former leader of West Wiltshire district council. Term ends 2013.
• Worthing borough council: Marine ward, due to the impending resignation of outgoing council leader Keith Mercer (Conservative) who is moving to Cyprus. Term ends 2011.
• Worthing borough council: Salvington ward, due to the impending resignation of Conservative councillor Dr Heather Mercer who is taking up a university post in Cyprus. Term ends in May 2010.
• Wyre Forest borough council: Lickhill ward, after the death of Jill Fairbrother-Millis of the Kidderminster Hospital and Health Concern group. Term ends 2011.
• City of York council: Heworth ward, after the resignation of Labour councillor Paul Blanchard who has recently been declared bankrupt and is moving to London. Term ends 2011.
