Forthcoming byelections

Here are the forthcoming local government byelections:

29 May

5 June

There will also be elections taking place in Bettws and St. Julians wards, Newport city council, which were postponed from 1 May after the deaths of candidates.

12 June

  • Carlisle city council: Upperby ward, following the death of Labour’s June Martlew, sister of the city’s MP Eric Martlew. Her term would have ended in 2011. There will be a double vacancy election as the ordinary local election was postponed due to the death of a British National Party candidate, so the top polling candidate will get a term ending in 2012.
  • Gloucestershire county council: Brockworth division, after the resignation of Sean Connors of the Brockworth Residents Group. The new councillor will face re-election next May.
  • Oxford City Council: Holywell ward, caused by the resignation of Richard Huzzey (Liberal Democrat). The term ends in 2010.
  • Rother district council: Bexhill Collington ward, after the death of Ron Dyason (Conservative). His replacement will serve until 2011.
  • East Sussex county council: Bexhill King Offa division, also caused by the death of Ron Dyason. The new councillor will serve until 2009.
  • Waltham Forest borough council: Forest ward, following the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Imran Abrahim. The winner will have a seat until 2010.

There will also be elections in Harlow Common ward, Harlow borough council, and Hope ward, Flintshire county council, which were postponed from 1 May after the deaths of candidates.

The Conservatives have vacancies on Ipswich borough council, Castle Hill ward, after the death of Harry Davies; on Lincolnshire county council, Louth wolds division after the death of Sheila Roy, on Newark and Sherwood district council, Magnus ward, after the death of former Newark MP Richard Alexander, on Redbridge borough council, Cranbrook ward, following the death of Charles Elliman, on Shrewsbury and Atcham borough council, Pimhill ward, after the death of Brian Rees, and on South Norfolk district council, Diss ward, after the death of Brian Clark-Taylor.

There are Labour seats vacant in Caerphilly county borough council, Risca West ward, after the death of Keith Griffiths, on Stafford borough council, Common ward, following the death of John Kennedy, in North East Derbyshire district council, Killamarsh West ward, following the death of Colin Robinson, and on Wigan borough council, Wigan West ward, after the death of Michael Baines.

Havering borough council‘s South Hornchurch ward has a vacancy after the death of veteran Residents’ Association councillor Len Long. In North East Derbyshire district council, Unstone ward is vacant following the death of Fred Hopkinson, who was an Independent councillor. Sedgefield district council‘s Sedgefield ward has a vacancy after the death of Independent councillor Jim Wayman.
