Here are the byelections in the pipeline.

7 February

14 February

  • Elgin City South ward, Moray council, caused by the death of Alastair Bisset who was an Independent councillor. The term ends in 2011.
  • Leyton ward, Waltham Forest borough council, to replace Miranda Grell who had been elected for the Labour Party. Grell was disqualified from membership when she was convicted of making false statements about another candidate at her original election. Her replacement will serve until 2010.
  • Stretton ward, East Staffordshire borough council, after the resignation of Ian Bradley (Conservative). His replacement will serve until 2011.
  • Tulketh ward, Preston city council after the death of Jean Al-Seraj (Labour). The winner will serve until 2010.

Please note that where authorities have elections on 1 May, no byelection is held to fill vacancies where the new councillor would have a term less than six months.

There are known to be Conservative vacancies in Borehamwood Hillside ward, Hertsmere borough council, following a resignation, in Hawks Green ward of Cannock Chase district council after the death of deputy leader of the council Reg Butler, in Hockley West ward, Rochford district council, following the disqualification of Liv Hungate for failing to attend any meetings in six months, in St John’s ward, Rushmoor district council after the death of Graham Tucker, in St Mary’s ward, Adur district council following the death of Mike Howard, in Scartho ward, North East Lincolnshire council, caused by the death of Tony Rouse, and in Wrenthorpe and Outwood West ward, Wakefield borough council, after the resignation of Anthony Calvert.

Labour seats are vacant in each of Bedwell division of Hertfordshire county council and Pin Green ward, Stevenage borough council, after the death of Tanis Kent, in Holmewood and Heath ward, North East Derbyshire district council, following the death of Terry Fisher, in Netherton and Orrell ward, Sefton borough council, after the death of group leader Dave Martin, in Tanhouse ward of West Lancashire district council after the death of Sally Keegan, in Vassall ward, Lambeth borough council following the death of Liz Atkinson, and in Walkden South ward, Salford city council, following the resignation of Stan Witkowski.

The Liberal Democrats have vacancies in both Grove and Wantage division, Oxfordshire county council and Wantage Charlton ward, Vale of White Horse district council after the death of Jim Moley, and in Walton ward, Peterborough city council, caused by the resignation of David Vellam.

In Barnwood ward, Gloucester city council, there is a vacancy in a Liberal Democrat seat caused by the resignation of Phil Taylor, although he was sitting as a Conservative-supporting Independent at the time of his resignation. Brockworth division, Gloucestershire county council, is vacant following the resignation of Sean Connors of the Brockworth Residents Group. Horsehay and Lightmoor ward of Telford and Wrekin council is vacant because Adam Pringle, who represented it as an Independent, has resigned. Sedgefield ward of Sedgefield borough council also has a vacancy caused by the death of Independent councillor Jim Wayman. There is a vacancy in Walton North ward, Elmbridge borough council, caused by the disqualification of Alexander Nissen for failing to attend any meeting in the past six months.
