Jim Ryan, who was elected as an Independent councillor to Solihull borough council, has announced he is joining the Conservative group. The shift takes the Conservatives two seats away from an overall majority.

(Ryan has been inaccurately described as a Labour councillor; he was elected as Labour from 1980 to 2004 but left the party four years ago and won his last election as an Independent in Bickenhill ward.)
