These are the council vacancies known about:

1 November

  • Broseley West ward, Bridgnorth district council, caused by the death of Independent councillor Roy Lane. Another Independent candidate has been returned unopposed to a term which ends in 2011.
  • Sutton in Ashfield West ward, Ashfield district council, as a result of the resignation of Independent councillor Roy Adkins. Suspended from office by the Standards Board, Cllr Adkins chose to resign his seat. His replacement will serve until 2011.

8 November

  • Brookside ward, Telford and Wrekin council, caused by the death of Jim Hicks (Labour). The winner of the byelection will take a term ending in 2011.
  • Castle ward, Tamworth borough council, following the resignation of Graham Ingley (Conservative) due to ill health. The winner will serve until 2010.
  • Hadleigh North, Babergh district council, caused by the resignation of David Warner (Liberal Democrat) for health reasons. The winner will serve until 2011.
  • Holy Trinity ward, Guildford borough council, caused by the death of Michael Crocombe (Liberal Democrat). The winner will serve until 2011.

  • Treharris ward, Merthyr Tydfil county borough council, caused by the resignation of controversial Independent councillor Ian Tuck. This is likely to be the last byelection in Wales before the ‘six month rule’ kicks in as all councillors are up for re-election in May 2008.

There are known to be Conservative vacancies in Chiswick Riverside ward, Hounslow borough council following the death of Robert Kinghorn, in Harpenden South West division, Hertfordshire county council after the death of Iris Tarry, in Lovett and North Claines ward, Wychavon district council, following the death of Paul Coley, in Marlow North and West ward, Wycombe district council, following the resignation of Tony Dunn who has taken a politically restricted post, and Remenham and Wargrave, Wokingham borough council, following the death of Chris Schutz.

Labour seats are vacant in Holmewood and Heath ward, North East Derbyshire district council, following the death of Terry Fisher, in Masson ward, Derbyshire Dales district council, following the death of John March, in North Middleton ward, Rochdale borough council, following the death of Ian Robertson, and in Tulketh ward, Preston city council after the death of Jean Al-Seraj.

The Liberal Democrats have vacancies in Bagshot ward, Surrey Heath borough council, following the death of Bryan Ward, in Newton ward, Sandwell borough council, following the death of former group leader Martyn Smith, and in Cupernham ward, Test Valley borough council.

There is an Independent seat vacant in Llandybie ward, Carmarthenshire county council, following the death of Independent councillor Mary Thomas, and the lack of attendance of the British National Party’s James Lloyd at Sandwell borough council for six months has led to his seat being declared vacant. Green Party councillor Dr Hermione Roy has resigned from Brighton and Hove city council leaving a vacancy in Regency ward.
