The following local authority byelections are forthcoming:
18 October
- Church Gresley ward, South Derbyshire district council, caused by the death of Labour councillor Bob Southern. The winner will serve to 2011.
- Croyland ward, Wellingborough borough council, caused by the resignation of Conservative councillor Paul Ainge. The winner will serve until 2011.
- Rossmore ward, Ellesmere Port and Neston borough council, caused by the death of Labour councillor Ivor Jones. His term would have ended in 2011.
- Sandbach West ward, Congleton borough council, caused by the death of Conservative councillor David Atkin. The winner must stand for re-election in May.
- Whitchurch ward, Basingstoke and Deane borough council, caused by the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Alison Wall. Her term would have run to 2010.
- Wigan Central ward, Wigan borough council, which follows the death of Conservative councillor Jim Davies. The winner will serve until 2011.
25 October
- Gwinear, Gwithian and Hayle East, Penwith district council, caused by the resignation of Sarah Roskilly (Conservative). The term is a short one, ending in May 2008.
- Little Parndon and Hare Street ward, Harlow district council, following the death of Jack Jesse (Labour). The winner will have to stand for re-election in May 2008.
- Manor ward, Sefton borough council, caused by the resignation of Labour councillor Neil Douglas whose term would have ended in May 2008.
- Nelson ward, Great Yarmouth borough council, after the death of Sue Robinson (Labour). Her term would have run to 2011.
- Penrith East division, Cumbria county council, caused by the resignation of Mike Ash (Liberal Democrat). The winner will serve until 2009.
- Stansty ward, Wrexham county borough council, following the death of Liberal Democrat Alan Nichols. The winner will only serve until May.
- Toddbrook ward, Harlow district council, following the death of Roy Collyer (Labour) who had been serving a term ending in 2010.
- Witheridge ward, North Devon district council, caused by the resignation of Conservative councillor Nancy Lewis. The successful candidate serves until 2011.
1 November
- Broseley West ward, Bridgnorth district council, caused by the death of Independent councillor Roy Lane. The winner will serve until 2011.
- Sutton West ward, Ashfield district council, as a result of the resignation of Independent councillor Roy Adkins. Suspended from office by the Standards Board, Cllr Adkins chose to resign his seat. His replacement will serve until 2011.
8 November
- Castle ward, Tamworth borough council, following the resignation of Graham Ingley (Conservative) due to ill health. The winner will serve until 2010.
- Hadleigh North, Babergh district council, caused by the resignation of David Warner (Liberal Democrat) for health reasons. The winner will serve until 2011.
- Holy Trinity ward, Guildford borough council, caused by the death of Michael Crocombe (Liberal Democrat). The winner will serve until 2011.

There are known to be Conservative vacancies in Cobham Fairmile ward of Elmbridge borough council because of the death of Wyn Heasman, in Manor ward, Forest Heath district council, to succeed Sue Syvret (Conservative), and Remenham and Wargrave, Wokingham borough council, following the death of Chris Schutz.
Labour seats are vacant in Hareholme ward, Rossendale borough council, following the death of Peter Gill, in Holmewood and Heath ward, North East Derbyshire district council, following the death of Terry Fisher, and in Masson ward, Derbyshire Dales district council, following the death of John March.
The Liberal Democrats have vacancies in the Aylsham division of Norfolk county council because of the death of Liberal Democrat councillor Graham Rix, in Newton ward, Sandwell borough council, following the death of former group leader Martyn Smith, and in Cupernham ward, Test Valley borough council.
There is an Independent seat vacant in Llandybie ward, Carmarthenshire county council, following the death of Independent councillor Mary Thomas.
