The Conservatives won a seat on Sunderland city council from Labour last night in Washington East ward, and also retained their seat on Cheshire county council in the Gowy division (which comprises middle-class suburbs of Chester); that result ensures Cheshire stays with a Conservative majority.

Labour won a seat formerly held by Independents in Lindhurst ward, Mansfield borough council, and comfortably retained seats on Chester-le-Street district council and Northamptonshire county council. Three byelections in Dover also saw Labour wins, with an increased majority in Aylesham ward and a comfortable hold in Maxton, Elms Vale and Priory ward of Dover District council, but a swing to the Conservatives in Dover Town division of Kent county council. Finally in Nelson ward, Portsmouth city council, Labour held a seat vacated by a councillor who had moved to Scotland with almost no swing.
