Here are the byelections for which polling days have been set. (updated)
23 August
- Squirrels Heath ward, Havering borough council, caused by the death of Conservative councillor Eddie Cahill. The winner serves until 2010.
- Thedwastre South division, Suffolk county council, caused by the resignation of Sue Sida-Lockett (Conservative). Her term ran until 2009.
30 August
- Loughton Alderton ward, Epping Forest district council, caused by the resignation of Terry Farr of the British National Party. The winner will serve until next May.
- Newport North division, Isle of Wight county council, caused by the resignation of Julian Whittaker (Conservative). The term runs to 2009.
- Remenham, Wargrave and Ruscombe ward, Wokingham borough council, caused by the death of Chris Schutz (Conservative). The winner will have a seat until 2010.
6 September
- Crystal Palace ward, Bromley borough council, caused by the death of veteran Liberal Democrat (ex SDP, ex Labour) councillor Chris Gaster. The term runs to 2010.
- Heworth without ward, York city council, following the sudden death of Bill Bennett (Conservative). The winner will serve until 2011.
11 September (a Tuesday poll)
- Broomfield and the Walthams, Chelmsford borough council, caused by the death of Conservative councillor Alan Willsher who had only just been re-elected to a term ending in 2011.
13 September
- Glastonbury St Edmunds, Mendip district council, caused by the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Nick Cottle. His term would have run to 2011.
- Goodshaw ward, Rossendale borough council, caused by the resignation of Michael Ormerod (Conservative) who had emigrated to Italy. This is one of three Rossendale byelections caused by resignations of Conservative councillors. The term will end in May 2008.
- Irwell ward, Rossendale borough council, following the resignation of Janet Farquharson (Conservative), one of three resignations on the council; she is moving to Scotland. The byelection is for a term ending in May.
- Mochdre ward, Conwy county council, caused by the death of Labour councillor Sue Jones. The winner will be up for re-election next May.
- Pantiles and St Marks ward, Tunbridge Wells borough council, caused by the disqualification of Conservative councillor Gillian Barber-Hughes due to an oversight: re-elected this May, she failed to sign the declaration of acceptance of office within two months. She is standing for re-election to a term ending in 2011.
- Stonebridge ward, Brent borough council, caused by the death of Labour councillor Dorman Long. The winner will serve until 2010.
- Warbreck ward, Liverpool city council, after the death of Liberal Democrat former Mayor Joan Laing. Her term was due to expire in May 2008.
- Whitefoot ward, Lewisham borough council, caused by the disqualification of Sera Kentman (Independent, elected as Liberal Democrat) who has not attended a council meeting for six months. Her term would have run until 2010.
- Whitewell ward, Rossendale borough council, also called after the resignation of a Conservative councillor, in this case Marlene Crosta who has been in ill health. The winner will fight for re-election in May 2008.
20 September
- Abbey ward, Nuneaton and Bedworth borough council, caused by the death of Peter Ashby (the sole Liberal Democrat member of the council). The winner serves until 2010.
- Brandwood ward, Birmingham city council, to replace veteran Conservative and former Liberal Democrat councillor Ken Hardeman. His term would have run to 2010.
- Pembroke St Michael ward, Pembrokeshire county council, caused by the death of John Allen (Liberal Democrat) whose term expired in May 2008.
- St Clement ward, Worcester city council, following the resignation of Conservative councillor and former Mayor Ian Imray who has emigrated to New Zealand. He would have served until 2011.
- West Wigan ward, Wigan borough council, caused by the resignation of Labour councillor Joe Shaw who is under police investigation. The winner will serve to 2010.

4 October
- Helensburgh and Lomond South ward, Argyll and Bute council, caused by the death of Ronald Kinloch who was an Independent. The term runs to 2011.
