In the two byelections this week, Labour easily retained its hold on Charlestown ward in Manchester while the Hornchurch Residents Association kept on to St Andrews ward in Havering borough council.

Some seats which remained unfilled at the local elections on 3 May, due to the deaths of candidates, were filled on Thursday. In Berry Head with Furzeham ward of Torbay unitary authority, the election sent two Independent candidates and one Conservative to Torbay council in place of the two Conservatives and one Liberal Democrat at the previous election. There was another split result at Wingrove in Newcastle-upon-Tyne city council, where the two seats up for election were filled by one Labour and one Liberal Democrat.

More predictable were Conservative holds at Hockley North ward, Rochford district council, and three seats in Brigg and Wolds ward of North Lincolnshire council. Conservative candidate Henry Forse navigated sniggering about his election slogan ‘VOTE FORSE X’ to keep his seat on New Forest district council in Bramshaw, Copthorne North and Minstead ward. The Liberal Democrats also held on in Warley ward of Calderdale borough council.
