Labour gained the Speke-Garston ward of Liverpool city council in a byelection last night, taking the seat from the Liberal Democrats. The ward had elected three Liberal Democrats in 2004 but went strongly Labour in 2006, so the gain was widely expected.
The only other byelection last night saw a comfortable Conservative hold in Long Buckby division of Northamptonshire county council.
