Kendal North has a byelection on 23 September (also held by the Liberal Democrats). The Liberal Democrats held Grange at a byelection on 12 August. The Secretary of State intends to abolish the council and incorporate it into an east Cumbria unitary council. At a byelection on 6 May, the Liberal Democrats gained Broughton and Coniston from the Conservatives. Elections due in 2021 have been postponed by a year to allow a consultation on unitary local government in Cumbria.
